On Thursday, Vilnius residents saw the saying “Loves so much that it carries in their hands” fufilled in real life. Residents not only watched, but participated in an unusual programme – a Scandinavian style wife carrying competition, which was held on the occasion of “Nordika” shopping valley opening. 14 happy and competitive couples took part and a couple of Zygimantas Gecas-Zygis and Anzela Adamovic prevailed. Ineta Stasiulyte and Deividas Meskauskas were the last.
The competition took place in the heart of the city – V. Kudirka square. The winners completed a 100 metre long distance in 23 seconds
Before the event Anzela complained that Zygis made here lose wait. Meanwhile Ineta with Deividas said they are reparing for the Lithuanian traditional wife carrying on a bridge. Deividas was the only one to carry his partner as a bride – everyone else carried their partners on their shoulders.
Also, mem had to through a ball into a basket. Some couples made it easier then the lady was throughing the basketball ball.
Although he did not win, Deividas Meskauskas was fired with enthusiasm and greatly praised this amusement.
„The more entertainment in the city the better. It is great that Nordika brings some funnny Northern traditions here too. I had never heard about a wife carrying race before and I never have thought I would participate in it one day. But I like to try new things and I think Ineta does too“, Deividas Meskauskas sais.
Anzela Adamovic sais that this race brings couples together and unites them to have a good time and seek the best result.
„I had no idea that such race exists and there is even a championship of wife carrying. I am really happy that there is such an entertainment for families. A woman is always happy then a man carries her in his arms. Though we are not a family yet, but I am glad that we have an oportunity to participate in this race“, Anzela Adamovic sais.
The first three places were rewared with prizes founded by “Nordika”. A fun atmosphere in the square was created by “Green Bridge Band” concert with Jurgis Bruzga.
Wife carrying was officially born in Finland in the 19th century (and probably unofficially long before that). In the 20th century it became popular around the world, with the first world championships in 1992. In Finlandthe winner of the competition receives his wife’s weight in beer as a prize.
“Nordika” shopping valley opened its doors on Thursday and the opening was marked by a party that lasts three days. On Friday, a Scandinavian mood will be spread by “Tribute to Roxette” concert, and on Saturday entertainment and surprises will continue from 12 PM till late night.
More than 30 both local and international shopping networks‘ stores operate in “Nordika”, including “Rimi Hypermarket”, “McDonald’s”, “Elektromarkt”, as well as one of the biggest in the Baltic countries “Baby city / Toy City” store.
